Review by Charbel Harb

Symphony No 4 and Symphony No 3 by Robert Still are two masterpieces of classical music that showcase the composer's exceptional talent and creativity. The album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates symphonic music and wants to experience the beauty of Still's compositions.

Symphony No 4 is a dynamic and powerful piece that moves through different moods and emotions. The first movement, marked "Allegro con brio," is a lively and energetic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the symphony. The second movement, "Andante," is more subdued and introspective, with beautiful melodies and intricate harmonies. The third movement, "Scherzo," is a playful and whimsical piece that showcases Still's sense of humor and wit. The final movement, "Allegro," is a triumphant and exhilarating piece that brings the symphony to a thrilling conclusion.

Symphony No 3 is a more contemplative and introspective piece that explores the deeper emotions of the human experience. The first movement, "Adagio - Allegro," is a sweeping and majestic piece that sets the stage for the rest of the symphony. The second movement, "Andante," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that showcases Still's ability to create evocative melodies and harmonies. The third movement, "Scherzo," is a playful and lighthearted piece that provides a welcome contrast to the more serious tone of the symphony. The final movement, "Allegro," is a thrilling and exhilarating piece that brings the symphony to a dramatic and satisfying conclusion.

Thanks for uploading this. It's one of my favourite works, and in my opinion it is a truly great work. It's a wonderful example of "organic development" - the way that Still uses the motifs announced in the first few bars to generate the material for the entire work is just astonishing, as is the structure of the piece and the way that it comes precisely full-circle at the end.

According to Malcolm Macdonald's sleeve-note, the inspiration from the piece came from Still's reading of a paper by the great British psychiatrist Dr. Charles Rycroft (Still was fascinated with psychology and psychiatry). I was interested enough to get a copy of the paper myself (it was published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and is also apparently included in one of Rycroft's books - not sure which). The paper discusses an attempt to treat a schizophrenic patient using psychoanalysis rather than medication: initially, it was apparently successful, but then the patient developed an intense paranoia which involved delusions of invasions by aliens, and that he was "chosen" to lead the war against them. Finally, he was committed to confinement in a psychiatric hospital. The astonishing thing is that although the piece clearly reflects aspects of this harrowing story (the emergence of the two "big tunes" near the end clearly associated with the patient's imaginary battle against the forces of evil), it still works convincingly as absolute music. Sibelius would have been proud of it.

I also enjoy the 3rd.

Great piece. Reminded of Richard Strauss, especially in the playful middle section. Excellent choice, along with Morgan and Searle a group of less well known Lyrita recordings.

Echt atemberaubend!
